Seven Seals Revealing Jesus Christ
The book of Revelation opens with the statement, A Revelation of Jesus Christ. In Chapter 4 of Rev. John is invited into the Throne room of Heaven, there he is introduced to the 24 elders, and the four beast. It is a most Holy Place with much praise and worship.
The focus soon turns to the Throne itself as you begin chapter 5. John’s attention is directed to the book held by the One on the Throne. What book is this? This is the word, be-ble-on, in the Greek, which indicates a written document, or scroll. This scroll is sealed with 7 seals.
Of course any scroll in the hand of God would be of vital importance. This scroll would surely involve the history and destiny of the entire planet.
Vs 4 indicated John’s distress at the thought that the contents of the scroll would remain sealed. The Bible records, John wept much!
Wept – kli-o in the Greek, this is akin to someone grieving for someone who has died.
Much – po-lu”s – this means exactly what is says, numerous, great, many, large.
John’s overwhelming grief is turned to joy when one of the elders states, “the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, hath (prevailed), to open the book, and loose the seals thereof.
Prevailed – ne-ka-o – to conquer, to carry off the victory, come off victorious
John as well as millions, believe that Christ was the Messiah, the redeemer. Paul records, Heb. 2:9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower that the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he, by the grace of God should taste death for every man. It now becomes very obvious that this book or scroll is humanities title deed to heaven. And even more obvious that only One, Christ, could buy the forfeited planet back. Only One could be the Redeemer, the Kinsman Redeemer!
In the Book of Genesis humanity, the crowning work of God’s creation is defeated by a rogue supernatural foe. This leaves us in a hopeless situation, we were sold into slavery and death. In Lev. 25:47-49 the concept is described. And if a sojourner or stranger wax rich by thee, and thy brother that dwelled by him wax poor, and sell himself unto the stranger or sojourner by thee, or to the stock of the stranger’s family: After that he is sold he may be redeemed again…
When Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden, they in affect sold their soul, and birthright, (their inheritance). The only hope for humanity would be if a kinsman would be willing to step forward and pay the redemption price. (verse 48 one of his brethren may redeem him).
There are 4 criteria for the kinsman redeemer;
# – 1 He must be a kinsman, (must be related)
#– 2 He must be free himself, (in a position to redeem)
# – 3 He must be able to pay the price, (sufficient resources)
# – 4 He must be willing to pay the price, (willing to make the necessary sacrifice)
Psalm 111 reveals the works of the Lord are great…, vs 9 He sent redemption unto his people…
Rev 5:12 states, The lamb is worthy to receive; power, riches, wisdom, strength, honour, glory, and blessing, for His role in our redemption. These characteristics summarize the 7 seals if rightly understood.
Power – seal #1 white horse – crown given to him and he went forth conquering. The first phase of Christ ministry begins with real power, and purity. After His baptism, (washing for high priestly ministry), he is driven by the Spirit into the wilderness. It is no coincidence that this takes him north into the wilderness of Perea. (In Zechariah 6, we find another reference to a white horse going north). Even though at a real dis-advantage against a supernatural foe, Christ emerges victorious, a mighty conqueror over temptation.
Riches – seal #2 red horse – (fire) – the ability to take peace from the Earth. This is a perfect description as Christ begins His ministry, His message was very disturbing to the Jews, My Kingdom is not of this world, the disciples of Christ became very fired up as they grasped the simplicity of His message. The result was the riches of grace received and the riches of souls won to the kingdom.
Wisdom – seal #3 black horse – holding a pair of balances in His hand. The Messiah will need great wisdom as He faces the trial of Gethsemane, the scene is darker than the blackest night. Christ cannot see through the portals of what lie ahead. He must pass this trial based on His trust in His father. What does He weight in the balance? the oil and the wine! What’s at stake, but souls and the entire plan of Salvation.
Strength – seal #4 Pale horse – Death and the grave, Christ gives His life a ransom for all humanity. He would need special strength to undergo this assault on His being. How could He endure so much, but it would come at a cost for Israel, John recalls the prophecy in Eze 14:13
the consequences of the land that sinneth against me by trespassing grievously… vs 21 when I send my four sore judgments upon Jerusalem, the sword, famine, noisome beast, and famine.
Honour – seal #5 martyrs under the altar crying out – How long O Lord? What are they really
asking, when Lord, will you end your mediation and settle the score? Here the intercessory work of Christ is brought to view . As Christ ascends to Heaven to begin His intercessory work He is the recipient of great Honour. The Greek word, (te-ma) means a valuing by which the price is fixed. His sacrifice for sin is suffient to complete this aspect of the atonement.
Glory – seal #6 A great earthquake, the dark day, moon becomes as blood, the heavens unroll as a scroll, every mountain and island are moved from their place. Who could deny this is the 2nd coming of Christ. The great day of His wrath is come. Titus 2 calls this His glorious coming, with all the angels of Heaven.
Blessing – #7 Silence in Heaven for 1/2 hour The Greek word for silence is, (se-ga) which means to command silence by making the sound. Here is where Christ and His Bride receive a special blessing, commanded by the Father, perhaps standing on the sea of glass in Heaven, what a scene. All God’s creation will stand in all, and silence during this most solemn time.
It is only the Lamb, Christ, the Kinsman Redeemer that could loose the 7 seals. It is a perfect description of the unique aspects of His anointing, ministry, passion, death, intercession, second coming, and blessed reunion with His redeemed, what a story!!!
